Albert Patterson case files, 1954-1960.

On the night of 1954 June 18, Attorney General-elect Albert L. Patterson was assassinated in his hometown of Phenix City, Ala. Patterson had campaigned on a platform of anti-vice in Alabama. He was particularly concerned with cleaning up Russell County and Phenix City. Patterson's son John was appointed to fill the position of Attorney General. This series consists of correspondence, memoranda, trial transcripts, litigation documents, wanted posters, handwritten notes, transcriptions of interviews, photographs, and other material created and/or maintained by assistant Attorney General Bernard F. Sykes during the course of th einvestigation and litigation concerning Patterson's murder. The State prosecution team also consisted of Attorney General John Patterson; MacDonal Gallion and George Young, assistants to the Attorney General; and James Webb, Council. The case of Albert Fuller vs. the State of Alabama began 1954 Nov. 29 with Grand Jury Proceedings. In addition to wanted posters for Willis Murrell Jowers and Clarence Olin Revel, the records contain interviews with other suspects and witnesses. Sykes' research and notes taken during the trial are also contained in this series.
